Helping our children
The Children's Society has been helping the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children in England for nearly 125 years giving them the support and advice they need to enjoy a brighter future.
Our mission is to create a world that loves all children unconditionally, and where children are free to be children.
We work to ensure children can be heard, understood and loved and to promote the message that a better world for children is better world for all.
From our origins in 1881 helping homeless children through our children's homes, we now help 50,000 children each year through our 90 community-based projects.
While we are a national charity, our projects are based within local communities and our work has a direct impact on the lives of children and their families within them.
We focus on four key areas which we have recognised as amongst the most important and unsupported problems in our society. These areas are:
- children at risk on the streets
- disabled children
- children in trouble with the law
- child refugees
Our direct work with children in these areas is supported by our campaigning arm.
Our current Safe and Sound campaign highlights our work with child runaways. Each year, 100,000 children are forced to leave home because it is no longer a safe place for them to be. Many of these children end up living on the streets where they are easy targets for pimps, paedophiles and criminals. The Children's Society is calling on local authorities provide a national network of safe emergency accommodation for young runaways and we are asking our supporters to sign our on-line petition to show their support.
